Useful Software/Hardware for SW radio enthusiasts

I decided to create a new topic dedicated to sharing apps, software and hardware related with the radio hobby… Feel free to leave your info and download links…!

This is a very useful free map software by the same man that created the SDR Console software.
Simon World Map
It shows the world map with longitude clocks, locator grids, greyline, aurora, Sun and Moon position, Satelites position, short/long path info and indicator, and more…
Lust give it a try it is no doubt a great radio activity map.
You can download it here: https://www.sdr-radio.com/world-map

Good idea for a topic! I use a lot of different software packages and am always interested in trying out more.

For anyone interested in digital modes I recommend checking out MultiPSK. It can decode a large number of modes used on Shortwave, VHF and UHF, not just Ham Radio use either. The interface is a bit complex/messy and there’s a steep learning curve on how to use, but help is also available. You can try the free version before paying for the “pro” version that gives you more modes.

Is this a useful gadget or just another useless snakeoil project…?

https://hackaday.com/2026/05/04/a-shortwave-sensor-to-monitor-the-ionosphere/

I get the concept of that but can’t see it being all that useful. I do consult the solar activity info to look for band openings but you can simply use your radio and check to see if you can receive transmissions or not.

I’m not knocking the science of the product, I would rather spend the money on items I can use more effectively,

Unfortunately one of the cheapest and best SDR receivers on the market capable of HF receiving is now finished…
RTL-SDR V4 will not be made any more…

I tried at least 3 times to order one of these - 2 of them were lost in the mail and the other went out of stock around the time I ordered. I’ve had good luck with nooelec SDR’s for cheap setup items and they’re much easier to order (for my location anyway).

I got myself a SDR Play MSI RSP1 Clone… It’s a bit better than the RTL-SDR V4 but for the other side the RTL-SDR has more compatibility with software except the SDR Play of course…
I’m quite pleased with my clone, it’s 12 Bits /10Khz bandwith instead of the 8Bit/4Khz of the RTL-SDR… And it is still available. On Aliexpress there are loads of fake V4 RTL-SDR’s that in reality are just V2 or V3 with a V4 case so be careful with that…

I found this Artemis Radio Signal Recognition software to be helpful in making sense of signals while monitoring radiowaves using SDR.
