Few weeks ago, I was listening to a Hausa language broadcast from China Radio Int. I noticed they’re playing Indian music. Chinese propaganda station playing Indian music for Africans is the most random thing I’ve ever seen. 
I’ve also seen Radio Taiwan playing American music. Maybe it’s a common thing for state owned shortwave stations to play foreign music, but I don’t understand the point.

I’ve noticed a bit of that myself, although I find Radio Havana Cuba to have some of the strangest things going on at various times - probably due to some of the issues they’re facing. Incorrect schedules, mistakes between SW broadcasts and intelligence broadcasts etc. Some of the fun things to look out for when hunting on HF!

back when libya was at war, their shortwave service played african music and messages of peace and solidarity to the people in multiple languages within the last days before the fall of the then regime. i managed to make a recording but unfortunatly lost it. not sure if this counts as “strange”, but it was a remarkable piece of media that will never be broadcast again.

It reminds me of a shortwave station called “Voice of Tigers“ which was run by the Tamil Tigers, a separatist rebel group in Sri Lanka. That rebel group has been completely gone since losing the civil war in 2009. I should have listened to their broadcasts back then.

I used to periodically hear the “Alphabet Lady” or “E10” numbers station. Unsurprisingly I was able to pick it up very clearly while deployed to the Middle East.

i could hear E10 sometimes as well up in europe - they sure weren’t low on timeslots and frequencies back in the 2000s
